History

USAID’s Global Climate Change (GCC) Office first published guidance on climate change adaptation in 2007. At the time, USAID and other organizations were just beginning to grapple with how to address the impacts of climate change and variability at the project level across many development sectors. In 2010, USAID began to program substantial resources dedicated to climate change adaptation through its Climate Resilient-Development (CCRD) project. At this time, USAID’s focus shifted to a “development-first” approach to climate change adaptation, which incorporates the consideration of climate stressors into existing development planning processes. The following graphic describes key USAID adaptation documents published since 2007. Additional resources on climate-resilient development are provided in the CCRD Library.
